Our written curriculum would not have much chance of being effective if we didn’t engage teachers in planning the delivery of instruction. Dr. Sauer teaching

In Mason City Schools, our teachers work on instructional guides that map out each course or grade level, the major units of study, instructional strategies, and resources. These might also be in the form of a pacing guide for a course or grade level content.

In some cases, our teachers are also engaging in writing common unit plans. A unit of study represents the teaching of a chunk of content that makes sense together. Unit plans are a great way for teachers to get down to examining what actually works best in achieving learning goals. They work through individual teaching styles and preferences to get to actual effective delivery of the curriculum.

With common unit plans, our teachers can test the best methods and determine the most effective strategies for getting the results we want. Teacher teams focused around common unit plans learn from each other and continuously improve their effectiveness. They are a powerful tool for professional learning.
