MHS Announces 2018 Valedictorian, Salutatorians
Posted on 06/04/2018
SalutatoriansStudents, families and friends attending the William Mason High School Class of 2018’s graduation ceremony were treated to a powerful speech by the class Valedictorian Atneya Nair during the school’s commencement ceremony on May 20.

Valedictorian Nair is the son of Santosh and Deepam Nair. He plans to major in Electrical and Computer Engineering and will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology this fall.

Nair shared two things that his time at MHS taught him. He offered classmates the following advice.

When thinking back upon four years, it’s hard to see the threads that connect a class so diversely brilliant together. As Mason's largest class ever: 950+ strong, it might have felt overwhelming, but we have left our mark. Although I have always felt like a part of Comet Country, my experiences are no more valuable than any other students, and the variety of accomplishments this class holds makes me question why I am up here today. I will spare you lengthy anecdotes and contrived metaphors. Instead, I will share two simple things my time at MHS taught me.

1. Be a cheerleader. The benefit of a massive school like Mason is that success is found in almost every form here. However, rather than comparing ourselves against one another, we stand behind each other. Whether it is athletics, extra-curriculars, academics or community events, we are proud of the same accomplishments and support one another through the same defeats.

2. Pay it forward. Going to High School at Mason has endowed you with a set of skills, a depth of character, and an understanding of the world around you. The time and care that every teacher, administrator, faculty member and every element of the MHS community has spent on you is immeasurable. Talk to any teacher at MHS, and you will understand the source of their vocational passion relatively quickly. MHS has invested in you, each and every member of the class of 2018.

The class of 2018 also had three Salutatorians: Amanda Cheng, Jeffrey Huang, and Connie Mi. Cheng is the daughter of Allan Cheng and Linda Lu. She plans to study Integrated Business and Engineering at the Ohio State University. Huang is the son of Zhifan and Xiaoru Wang, and was unable to attend graduation because he was competing at the Science Olympiad nationals! He plans to study Economics at the University of Chicago. Mi is the daughter of Tongwei Mi and Fang Li. She plans to study Engineering and Math at the University of California-Berkeley.
