MECC Students & FirefightersMason Early Childhood Center students practiced the skill of showing empathy with local firefighters on February 15.

"The entire MECC staff has been reading
A Mindset for Learning this year," shared MECC Assistant Principal Jennifer Johnson. "A small group has been leading this work for the staff, and we developed a Comet Kid graphic with all of the stances that we refer to when teaching our students."

The Comet Kids graphic encourages optimism, flexibility, empathy, resilience, and persistence - all attributes of a

The MECC Mindset Pilot Team conducted its first reach out opportunity with the empathy event. Students read the book
You and Me and Empathy by Jayneen Sanders. The book helps students talk about their feelings and discover their ability to understand others' emotions, too. Next, Mason firefighters met with students in small groups and talked about how they get to practice empathy, compassion and kindness in their jobs.

During the assemblies, care packages were compiled and students made cards to show appreciation to Mason's finest. These care packages were then taken back to the fire station to be shared with the other firefighters.

"Em
pathy: I can feel someone else’s feelings in my heart," explained MECC Kindergarten Teacher Kristine Mraz. "We practiced empathy by joining other classes to learn about fire fighters’ jobs - from Mason’s finest! - and creating care packages for all they do for us."
