Learning is Personal in Mason Schools

Learning is Personal in Mason Schools
Posted on 09/16/2019

Last year Mason City Schools launched its 3 Big Rock Strategy to communicate the district’s commitment to culture, inclusive excellence, and personalized learning.   During the course of the 2018-2019 school year, teams of teachers, coaches, and administrators focused on growing a collective vision of Mason City Schools version of Personalized Learning.   The district teams established a definition and 5 Key Principles of Personalized Learning that would drive the work for future years.

This year, Mason is intentionally building capacity to begin personalizing students’ learning through continued study with national experts like Allison Zmuda, and through a process of reflective practice.   Eight cohorts of 77 teachers are working alongside eight Learning Experience Designers to examine their practices and design learning experiences for students that are founded in the 5 Principles of Personalized Learning.

In just a few short weeks, these teams have created meaningful and engaging learning experiences that lift the level of learning in our classrooms to new heights.    Teachers have focused on growing relationships to better understand who their students are as people, how they learn best, and what they want to learn. Classrooms from kindergarten to high school have examined the idea of the Learning Pit.  This embodies the idea that learning should be challenging, and that with persistence, and strategic plans, we can not only make it through a learning challenge, but develop a mindset for stepping out of our comfort zone and growing ourselves through continuous learning and reflection.

Not only are the students reflecting on their learning journeys, but teachers are as well!  In this blog post, MHS English teacher Shawna Parkinson describes her first few days diving into the work.  Learning Experience Designer, Joe Muhlberg, describes the emotion and excitement involved in creating a new type of learning experience in this blog post on Learning Personalized.
