MHS Sophomore's Ode to the Microphone Published by Princeton University Mag
An essay by Mason High School sophomore  Alex Wang was selected as a winning piece in the 2016 Innovate Essay Competition held by  Princeton Innovation Magazine. Wang's essay drew upon his experience in band and speech and debate. He chose to write about the invention of the microphone - noting its impact to amplify sound, and in turn ideas.
"The most impactful breakthrough in technology didn't come as a single event that shattered the fabric of the world, nor did it culminate in the coming of a new age. Instead, it enabled and enhanced the voice of all future generations, allowing people to reach further, express more, and spread their art and ideas across the world. The microphone resulted in the development and unity of global culture: it allowed the voice of the people to be heard, their ideas to be expressed and spread, and perhaps most importantly for us it captures and immortalizes the sounds we create in the suspended animation of recording," Wang wrote.
Wang’s piece will be published online at, as well as in the magazine. Chosen winners were also invited to attend Innovation’s The Art of Science Communication symposium and colloquium at Princeton University on March 6.
Magazine editors shared they received many submissions in the first year of this competition, and the winning entries in particular displayed strong vision, clarity of writing as well as a deep understanding of how our past, obstacles, and often sheer luck have shaped the course of scientific and technological progress.
Along with being an excellent writer, Wang also received a perfect score of 1520 on his PSAT test taken last fall. He is a dedicated member of the state-bound MHS Science Olympiad team, and he and his partner  Atneya Nair won first place in the 2016 GMV District Speech and Debate Public Forum event.
