Mason Hosts DI Instant Challenge NightMore than 400 students and community members recently participated in the Mason Destination Instant Challenge Night at Mason Middle School.

The DI Instant Challenge Night was a practice session organized for Mason teams to experience a wide variety of Instant Challenges similar to those that teams will encounter in competition. There were 39 Mason teams who participated, all of whom had adult volunteers supervising stations, and those teams participated in seven different challenges.

Destination Imagination is one of the premier student innovation competitions in the world. Since taking on the program several years ago, DI District Coordinator and MMS Visual Arts teacher Lisa Fish and MMS robotics teacher Marty Fish have grown Mason's participation to more than 300 students grades K-11. Over 40 teams will compete this year. Every year several teams advance from our Regional tournament to compete at the State and even Global levels with thousands of students from all over the globe.

In a DI Tournament, students take part in two challenges - the Team Challenge and an Instant Challenge.

In the Team Challenge, student teams select one of the offered open-ended challenges and work on preparing their solution with a community member Team Manager for several months. Each challenge has aspects of performance, engineering, art, and a heaping dose of innovation. Team Challenges in 2018-19 include Technical Challenge, Scientific Challenge, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Service Learning, and Rising Stars.

In the Instant Challenge, teams are given an innovation task - either engineering or performance or both, along with limited time and materials to solve. They are judged based not only on their solution, but also their teamwork.

"Destination Imagination is a competitive STEAM program that not only teaches our students valuable academic skills, but also 21st century skills. As students work together through the year not only do they create amazing projects, but they also create friendships," shared Lisa Fish.

Destination Imagination Instant Challenges are designed to help children understand that by working collaboratively and following their innate curiosity, they can approach any problem with confidence and tenacity.
