Mason School Board Approves 2-Year Agreement with TeachersDuring its April 23 meeting, the Mason City Schools Board of Education unanimously approved a two-year agreement with the Mason Education Association (MEA). The contract was overwhelmingly ratified on April 10 by the MEA, which represents about 625 Mason educators.

The agreement calls for a 2.5 percent increase in salaries for each year of the two-year contract covering the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Teachers who are eligible will receive step increases.

All district administrators and non-union classified employees (aides, bus drivers, clerical, and technical staff) will receive the same wage increase as the district’s educators. The Board of Education is currently negotiating with its custodial staff. The district’s custodial and maintenance staff are represented by the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) Local 070.

2-Year Contract Atypical

During most negotiations in Mason, the MEA and the school board have agreed to three-year contracts. Ohio law requires that districts only enter into agreements that they have the funds to cover, based on the district’s 5 year financial forecast. Mason only had enough cash on hand to certify a contract with teachers through FY 2021. It has been 14 years since Mason City Schools passed an operating levy.

“Mason is the beneficiary of many years of careful financial planning by previous boards and administrations and collaboration with the entire staff and community. In Ohio, school districts don’t get a ‘cost-of-living’ increase in state funding. In fact, since the 1970s, Ohio law has dictated that schools cannot collect inflationary increases that align with increasing property values. Consequently, we are getting nearer to a point in time when we will need to raise revenue, cut expenditures, or a combination of both,” said Steele.
