At the 2016 Bands of America Toledo Regional, the band captured first place, along with Outstanding Music Performance, Visual Performance, and General Effect. The band was also named Class AAAA Champion in preliminary competition and swept all captions. Mason competed against marching bands from across the states of Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, including their neighbors at Lakota West High School, who finished sixth.

“We are so proud of how hard our students have worked and how well they performed,” shared MHS Band Director Susan Bass, “but we are even more proud of the camaraderie and sportsmanship that they demonstrated with their peers. Watching our students congratulate and cheer for their Lakota West friends was a highlight for our staff.”

This year’s show, entitled “World out of Balance,” includes 50 inflatable, four-foot clear globes, dubbing Mason #thatbubbleband. “This is the first time we’ve had an interactive prop that is also a costume,” Bass explained. “The BOA judges were fascinated with this concept and are excited to see how we continue to explore the use of the globes throughout the season.”

Bass said the show itself, which takes the audience through multiple emotions, will also develop as the season progresses. “Right now, the show is very mysterious, and will continue to be intriguing as the story evolves,” said Bass.

Next up for Mason is the annual MidStates Band Association Mason Invitational on October 15 and the MSBA LaSalle Band Competition on October 22.
