Talking to Kids About Ukraine

Talking to Kids About Ukraine
Posted on 03/09/2022

Many of us - even those without a personal connection to Ukraine - are feeling the stresses of war from afar. We have noticed that some of our Comet children and teens are also experiencing confusion, fear, isolation, and frustration. This American Psychological Association article offers strategies for discussing the conflict in age-appropriate ways with children and teens.

Limit Media Exposure
No matter the age, it is a good idea to monitor media exposure. When young children are in the room, consider turning the TV off or changing the channel.

Help Be Part of the Solution
Locally, Matthew 25: Ministries is shipping humanitarian aid and conflict relief to Ukraine for distribution to refugees and people impacted. They are accepting the following product donations at their facility located at 11083 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242:

  • Personal care products: Antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, lotion, etc.
  • Paper products: Toilet paper, paper towels, etc.
  • Clothing: New and gently-used clothing.

Seek Support
Events like this impact everyone differently. Students with family serving in the military, children with family in Russia or Ukraine, and students who have anxiety or depression may need more support. If your child needs additional help, please feel encouraged to reach out to your school counselor, or Prevention & Wellness Designer
