Tournament of Roses President Visits Mason Marching Band

The William Mason High School Marching Band kicked off the season with a visit from 2016 Tournament of Roses® President Mike Matthiessen on August 7 and 8. Mason was selected to participate in the 127th Rose Parade presented by Honda, as one of only 20 marching bands in the world that will make the historic five-mile journey down Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard on January 1, 2016.

Over 2,000 cheering supporters welcomed Matthiessen and his wife, Ann, to Dwire Field at Atrium Stadium, where the marching band concluded their two-week long band camp with a performance of this year’s show entitled “Somewhere”.

The band also helped kick off the Mason Schools Foundation Race Back to School, where Matthiessen presented the official Rose Parade flag to director Bob Bass.

The Tournament of Roses President’s visit gave the Mason City Schools community the opportunity to showcase the dedicated students who will make the trip to Pasadena; the directors and parents who nurture and encourage them to be their very best; the #ConsistentlyGreat schools that remain committed to music as part of the education experience; and the community members who rally together to help make the march down Colorado Boulevard a reality.

During their weekend visit, the Matthiessens sampled local favorites, including Aponte’s pizza, Graeter’s ice cream, Skyline chili, and Montgomery Inn ribs. The Matthiessens also enjoyed a performance of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s annual concert festival, Lumenocity, at Music Hall.
